For me, self-care started with learning to re-connect with myself - allowing “Me“ time on a daily basis, even for a few minutes, just to do something that brings me joy, happiness and fulfilment. When we become a mum it’s easy to be so involved with the needs of our children that we forget about our own. It’s important to create space in our lives for ourselves again, to nurture our passions, our creativity, our emotional, mental and physical well-being.
If you’re feeling a bit disconnected from “You” and are not sure where to start, try asking yourself, “what brings me joy and fulfilment in my life”? What am I doing when I feel inner happiness and absolute bliss? It might have changed since becoming a mum, things that brought you joy in your “B.C” (Before Children) life may not be of interest now, so give yourself the opportunity to really feel into this question and see what comes up for you.
You might feel more empowered and vibrant when you’re physically active, maybe riding your bike, running, weights training, boxing or playing a team sport or perhaps you need to be more mentally stimulated by learning a new language, studying a short online course on a subject you find completely fascinating, developing a new skill or a hobby. You might love to feel pampered through facials, a trip to the hairdresser or taking a long relaxing bath. Or exploring yourself more emotionally and spiritually through yoga, meditation, journaling, learning the tarot, connecting to nature, or allowing your creativity to flow through painting, colouring, making jewellery, playing music, learning pottery or singing. Or simply relaxing with a book in the sunshine and a warm cup of tea… yes that’s right, A WARM cup of tea.
Here are some simple ways to start adding a bit of daily self-care into your life:
Positive affirmations are a simple way of lifting you up, and empowering you throughout the day, and the best part is you can do them anywhere and anytime. Finding a quiet space like hanging out the washing with the sun on your back is a beautiful time, or before you get out of your car to start the day, just sit for a minute. Close your eyes and become centred and quiet your mind, take a few calming breaths and say out loud or in your mind, 1 or 2 heart centred positive affirmations like:
I love myself unconditionally and without judgement
I am proud of who I am, just the way I am
I give myself the care and attention that I need
I deserve to feel inner happiness
I am open to give and receive love
It might feel a little strange at first, but once you do it a few times and start really believing in what you are saying, you’ll feel full of love and acceptance for yourself, and start saying your affirmations with a smile.
Using essential oils throughout the day can bring emotional balance and calm, a pick-me-up in energy or mental clarity & alertness for those days when we didn’t get a good night sleep. If you have an essential oil diffuser there are an endless number of blends for which ever type of day you are experiencing. When you’re out and about an Aromatherapy roller blends are a quick and easy way of applying essential oils, just apply to your wrists and take a deep breath and inhale the aroma. Our CALM blend is popular with mums, and has been created using the soothing essential oils of, Lavender, Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Frankincense and Patchouli which work together to ease feelings of stress and being overwhelmed and bring about feelings of peace and calm.
To create a calming blend for your diffuser, start with the amounts below and adjust to your preference:
3 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Sweet Orange, 2 Drops of Mandarin.
Another way to find some time for yourself in the evenings is having a TV/Phone free night. For me this was the best way to find time to do the things that nurture my inner-self. You could free up an hour or more at night to lose yourself in a brilliant book, escape your day to day routine by learning something new about the universe, or find inspiration to create something you never dreamed was possible.
I like to think of it this way, if we show our children that we love, respect and give time to ourselves, they will learn to love and respect themselves too. It’s making that commitment to nurturing ourselves and not feeling guilty, that may be the hardest but most necessary step.
